Gandhi Jayanti 2024: Known as the 'Father of the Nation' in India, Mahatma Gandhi continues to inspire people across the country.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2. This year marks the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the life, achievements and moral values of Mahatma Gandhi, whose non-violent activism is celebrated even today. Also, the day is celebrated with prayer sessions, memorial services and cultural programs across the country. Known as the 'Father of the Nation' in India, Mahatma Gandhi continues to inspire people across the country.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a key player in India's struggle for independence from British rule. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He began his career in South Africa before studying law at University College London, where he campaigned against racial injustice. It was then that his non-violent resistance concept, known as satyagraha, began to take shape.
Gandhi's principles of nonviolent resistance, the Salt March and demands for non-cooperation with the British inspired millions to join the fight for independence without resorting to violence. The actions of Gandhi and his followers contributed to India's independence on August 15, 1947. After Gandhi's assassination in January 1948, the Indian government declared October 2 as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday to remember his life and legacy.
Gandhi Jayanti is important because it emphasizes the importance of truth, non-violence, and peace. Gandhi's message still applies today as different types of conflicts arise and his teachings call for peaceful resolution of conflicts. Similarly, to emphasize its importance at the international level, this day is also known as International Day of Non-Violence.
Apart from honoring Mahatma Gandhi's achievements for India's independence, we also pledge to uphold his ideals by celebrating Gandhi Jayanti. Gandhi's teachings are often the subject of talks and activities organized through companies, communities and colleges to ensure that his legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
'Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.'
'All the religions of the world, while they may differ in other respects, unite in declaring that nothing lasts in this world except truth.'
'You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.'
'There are two kinds of power. One is derived from the fear of punishment and the other from acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and lasting than power derived from the fear of punishment.'
