Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe arrested on corruption charges. According to a report by news agency AFP, Wickremesinghe was detained after being questioned about his trip to London to attend a ceremony held in honor of his wife at a British university in September 2023.
According to the report, an official said that he will be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate. He further said that Wickremesinghe has been accused of using the country's resources for personal purposes.
Why was Ranil Wickremesinghe arrested?
Ranil Wickremesinghe stopped in London in 2023 while returning from Havana, where he attended the G-77 summit. Wickremesinghe and his wife Maitree attended a function at the University of Wolverhampton. Wickremesinghe had said that his wife had borne the expenses of her trip herself and no government money was used in it.
The police alleged that Wickremesinghe used government money for personal travel. According to the police, the investigation found that Ranil Wickremesinghe's bodyguard was also paid from the government treasury. Wickremesinghe had reached the CID office to record his statement on the same matter where he was arrested.

Wickremesinghe took over as president in July 2022 to complete Gotabaya Rajapaksa's term. Rajapaksa was forced to resign after protests broke out across Sri Lanka over corruption allegations. Wickremesinghe is credited with stabilising the country's economy after Sri Lanka's worst ever financial crisis in 2022, but he lost re-election in September.
