Why are farmers protesting in Rajasthan: A protest by local farmers against a ₹450 crore ethanol plant under construction in Rathi Khera village of Hanumangarh district in Rajasthan turned violent on Wednesday. The farmers, who are opposing the plant due to fears of pollution, attempted to demolish a wall of the under-construction facility, leading to a fierce clash between the police and the protesters.
Farmers' protest turns violent, stone-pelting and arson reported
The protest escalated when farmers breached the plant's wall with tractors. Police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas to control the situation. In retaliation, the agitated farmers pelted stones at police officers and set several police and administrative vehicles on fire.
More than a dozen people, including police officers, were injured in the violent clash. Congress MLA Abhimanyu Poonia was also injured in the confrontation and admitted to Hanumangarh District Hospital for treatment.
Reason for protest: Fear of pollution
Ethanol Plant Virodh ka kaaran: Farmers are protesting against the ethanol plant, which is being constructed in Rathi Kheda village at a cost of approximately ₹450 crore. The farmers' main concern is that the plant will increase environmental pollution in the area and negatively impact their fields and health. The farmers held a meeting in front of the Sub-Divisional Officer's office before the protest.
Administration Takes Action: Internet Shut Down and Section 144 Imposed
In view of the escalating tensions, the district administration has taken immediate and stringent measures:
- Internet Services Suspended: Internet services have been temporarily suspended in Tibbi and surrounding areas until further notice.
- Schools and Shops Closed: Schools and shops in the area have also been ordered to remain closed.
- Security Measures: Section 144 has been imposed throughout the area, and a heavy police presence has been deployed to maintain order.
The local administration has appealed to the public to maintain peace and not pay heed to rumors, while the situation remains tense.
