Who is Ajit Pawar?
Ajit Pawar is a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and currently serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is the nephew of Sharad Pawar, the president of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). Last year, Ajit Pawar broke away from his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government, after which he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister.
Ajit Pawar entered politics through the traditional family route – via sugar cooperatives. In 1991, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Baramati, but he resigned from the post just six months later when Sharad Pawar became the Defence Minister. Subsequently, Ajit won the assembly elections and became active in state politics. When Sharad Pawar became Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar was made a Minister of State in various departments.
Ajit Pawar, also known as 'Dada', is considered an ambitious and outspoken leader. He is believed to have always harbored aspirations of becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. According to reports, he was unhappy about not being made Deputy Chief Minister after the 2009 assembly elections, but he eventually secured the position in December 2010, replacing Chhagan Bhujbal. He also openly criticized the then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on several occasions.
