Spanish badminton legend Carolina Marín bid farewell to her career on March 26. Persistent knee issues ultimately compelled her to make this difficult decision. She announced this in an emotional video shared on social media. The caption accompanying the video read: "Her journey ends here." She stated clearly that she no longer wished to put her body at further risk. Marín announced that her professional badminton career has now come to an end and, consequently, she will not participate in the European Championships. It was her wish to step onto the court one last time, but she could not jeopardize her physical health to do so.

The 32-year-old Marin has had a truly magnificent career. She made history by winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Additionally, she claimed four medals at the World Championships. Furthermore, she won seven European titles. Marin's most celebrated rivalry was with India's star shuttler, PV Sindhu. The two players engaged in numerous thrilling encounters. Marin won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by defeating Sindhu in the final. Subsequently, she once again defeated Sindhu in the final of the 2018 World Championships.
