IIT Bombay and NLSIU have created a new chatbot 'Grahak Nyaya' with the help of Meta (Facebook)'s large language model Llama 3.1. Based on Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), this chatbot not only helps in filing complaints but also helps in preparing legal documents, notices and applications for the complainant.

The Consumer Ministry is currently using AI to listen to consumer complaints and provide solutions to them. This has resulted in an increase in the number of digital complaints. The project was first launched in the year 2023.

Who created this chatbot?

Professor Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharya and his team of the Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT Bombay developed this chatbot. Assistant Professor Dr. Rahul Hemrajani of NLSIU Bangalore and his team trained this chatbot by adding legal aspects. The Consumer Ministry was the knowledge partner in this project of Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharya and Dr. Rahul Hemrajani.

What has changed in consumer problems with AI?

  • In December 2015, 12,553 consumer complaints were registered in the country, whereas now this number has increased to 1,55, 138.
  • In the year 2023, it took an average of 66.26 days to resolve these complaints, while in 2024 this period has reduced to 48 days.
  • Companies against which there are more complaints are made convergence partners.
  • In 2017, the number of such companies was 263, which has now increased to 1,038. After the start of AI base project, these companies are able to give priority to the problems of consumers.
