As large parts of India face intense heatwave conditions, doctors and public health experts are urging people to stay hydrated and eat smart. Heatstroke can develop quickly when the body overheats

1. Coconut water

Fresh coconut water is one of the easiest ways to stay hydrated. It contains natural electrolytes like potassium and helps replace fluids lost through sweat.

2. Buttermilk (chaas)

Buttermilk is widely consumed across India during summer. It cools the body, supports digestion, and helps prevent dehydration. Adding a pinch of salt and roasted cumin can make it more effective

3. Lemon water (nimbu pani)

Lemon water is a simple and affordable drink that helps maintain hydration. It provides vitamin C and can be mixed with salt and sugar to create a quick homemade electrolyte drink.

4. Watermelon

Watermelon has a very high water content and is easy to digest. It helps keep the body cool and provides essential nutrients like vitamins A and C. It is best consumed fresh and chilled.

5. Cucumber

Cucumber is another water-rich food that helps prevent dehydration. It can be eaten raw, added to salads, or mixed into curd for a cooling dish.

6. Mango (in moderation)

While mango is a summer favourite, it should be eaten in moderation during extreme heat. Raw mango drinks like aam panna are more suitable, as they help prevent heatstroke and restore electrolyte

7. Curd (yogurt)

Curd helps maintain gut health and keeps the body cool. It can be consumed plain, as raita, or mixed with fruits for a light meal.

8. Mint-based drinks

Mint has natural cooling properties. Drinks like mint lemonade or mint-infused water can help reduce body heat and improve digestion.

9. Sabja (basil) seeds drinks

Soaked sabja seeds are often added to summer drinks. They help lower body temperature and keep you feeling full and hydrated.

10. Light, water-rich meals

Foods like khichdi, vegetable soups, and salads are easier to digest during extreme heat. Heavy, oily, and spicy meals can increase body heat and should be limited.

What to avoid during a heatwave

Avoid sugary sodas, excessive caffeine, and alcohol, as they can lead to dehydration. Packaged juices with high sugar content may also do more harm than good in extreme heat.
