The Honduran Liga Nacional, currently known as Liga Hondubet for sponsorship reasons, represents the highest tier of professional football in Honduras and serves as the heartbeat of the nation's most popular sport.

Founded in 1964 and commencing its inaugural season in 1965, the league has evolved into a highly competitive system that splits the annual football calendar into two distinct championships: the Apertura (Opening) tournament, which typically runs from July to December, and the Clausura (Closing) tournament, held from January to May.

Each of these "mini-seasons" crowns its own champion, providing twice the opportunity for domestic glory and qualification for international competitions like the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The league's structure is designed to maintain high intensity throughout the year. It currently features 11 member clubs—increased from the traditional 10—competing in a round-robin format during the regular phase of each tournament.

At the end of this phase, the top six teams advance to the playoffs, known as the Liguilla. The first and second-placed teams receive a direct bye to the semi-finals, while the remaining four teams battle in home-and-away quarter-final series to join them.

This knockout format culminates in a two-legged final that determines the tournament winner.
