Wian Ruthven is a South African professional batsman who currently plays for the Border cricket team, also known as the Eastern Cape Iinyathi. He is known for his aggressive batting and has been a key contributor for his team in the current CSA T20 Knockout competition.
Hoërskool Waterkloof’s rising star, Wian Ruthven, has firmly established himself as one of South Africa’s most prolific school-level opening batsmen.
Renowned for his clean, effortless striking at the top of the order, Ruthven has become a genuine threat to bowling attacks across the country.
Ruthven’s love for cricket began at just three years old, a spark that quickly grew into a lifelong passion. His talent was evident early, earning him places in multiple district and provincial squads as he progressed through the junior ranks.
At nine, he faced his first major test when he attended the Northerns trials — competing against players up to two years older than him. Three years later, he earned his first provincial cap for Northerns, a milestone he went on to replicate at both U13 and U17 levels.
When asked about his biggest role model, Ruthven’s answer is immediate and heartfelt:
“It is definitely my father. You’ll always find him next to the cricket field, whether it’s going well or poorly. His support throughout the years has played the biggest role in me becoming the confident player I am today.”
He also credits the guidance of coaches Cobus Pienaar, Righart Roos, and Ruan Sadler, whose mentorship has shaped his development since he joined the prestigious Pretoria-based school.
“They have given me the tools and opportunities, while allowing me the freedom to play my natural game,” he says.
Over the past three years, Ruthven has been an integral part of Waterkloof’s highly successful cricket programme. He recently celebrated a significant milestone — his 100th cap — in a classic derby against Menlopark, where he also took five catches in a memorable Finsbury fixture.
Among his standout moments, Ruthven fondly recalls the seven trophies Waterkloof lifted across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. But one memory stands above the rest:
scoring 117 in the Fain final against Marais Viljoen, complemented by his best friend Hernus Marais’ five-wicket haul.
“It’s a match I’ll cherish for a very long time,” he reflects.
With his sights set on breaking into a South African franchise side — and ultimately earning higher honours — Ruthven approaches his final year at Waterkloof with clear intent.
His goal is simple:
score more runs and bring home more trophies for the Klofies.
