Profile:

Tazmin Brits' journey in sport is as remarkable as it is inspiring. Growing up in Stilfontein, a mining town southwest of Johannesburg, she was surrounded by sport from a young age. Her mother played tennis, while her father and older brother were rugby players, and she herself dabbled in football, rugby, hockey, and netball. It was the javelin, however, where her natural ability first stood out. At just sixteen she became world junior champion, winning gold at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. With the Olympic rings tattooed on her arm, she seemed destined for the 2012 Games in London after meeting the qualifying distance.

That dream was cut short in devastating fashion. Months before the Olympics, Brits was involved in a life-threatening car accident. She spent months recovering and, although she returned to throw the javelin and even won smaller events, she could never quite recapture her previous level. It was during this difficult period that cricket began to take hold. Playing for North West, she started to pile up runs and quickly grew into one of the most consistent performers on the provincial circuit.

Her persistence was rewarded in 2018 when she made her T20I debut against Bangladesh. In 2021 she added an ODI cap against Pakistan, and from then on her role in the Proteas setup grew steadily. By 2022 she had earned her first central contract with Cricket South Africa, marking the start of her rise as a mainstay at the top of the order. She became a key figure in global tournaments, scoring valuable runs during the 2023 World Cup on home soil and again in the 2024 edition in the UAE. While South Africa fell agonisingly short in both campaigns, Brits' contributions underlined her importance to the side and cemented her reputation as a reliable opener.

By 2025, Brits was enjoying the best form of her career. On South Africa’s tour of the West Indies, she scored heavily, including a match-winning century in the decider that sealed the series. Her 184 runs across the ODIs earned her the Player of the Series award and reaffirmed her place as one of South Africa’s most dependable batters.
