Son of former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford, Hamish Rutherford is an exciting left-handed batsman in the Kiwi ranks. Bred during a time when New Zealand were struggling to find sound openers for long periods of time, Rutherford's brave modern-day-cricketer traits of aggressive cricket paid off well for him at the domestic as well as in his short international career thus far.
Hamish is known for his quick run-getting and special skills in the field along with his occasional left arm spin bowling. He came into the limelight with his debut season in 2008/09 for Otago, with great performances at the top of the order in the T20s and also played in the Champions League. Terrific performances in the domestic games awarded him a place in the New Zealand Under 19 squad for the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia but the youngster didn't get a chance in the playing XI.
Hamish had to wait for a long time before he could play for the New Zealand national side. He made his international debut in the 2013 home series against England across all three formats. However, his Test debut was more than memorable as the talented southpaw slammed his debut ton on just his third day as a Test cricketer, going on to score 171. Rutherford has had his troubles against spin and his incredible talent is often pushed under the carpet when he throws his wicket away after solid starts.
