UP Warriorz appoint Meg Lanning as new captain: Ahead of the fourth season of the Women's Premier League (WPL), UP Warriorz have pulled off a major coup. The franchise has appointed Australia's most successful former captain, Meg Lanning, as their new captain. UP Warriorz had acquired Lanning for ₹1.9 crore in the recent auction.
Taking over from Alyssa Healy
Meg Lanning will take over the captaincy from her compatriot Alyssa Healy. Healy was initially given the captaincy, but had to step down due to injury. Deepti Sharma also led the team in Healy's absence, but given the team's inconsistent performance, the management has now placed its trust in Lanning's experience.
Meg Lanning: A synonym for victory
Lanning's record speaks for itself. She is considered the most successful captain in women's cricket history:
- 7 World Cup titles: She has been part of 7 World Cup-winning campaigns for Australia (2 ODI and 5 T20 World Cups).
- Excellent WPL performance: Lanning has scored 952 runs in 27 matches in her WPL career so far, demonstrating her consistent batting prowess.
An honor to captain UP
Expressing her delight at her new role, Meg Lanning said, "It is an honor for me to captain UP Warriorz. The WPL is now in its fourth season, and the level of the league is constantly rising. Our team has a great mix of international stars and Indian talent, and I am fully prepared for this challenge."
Coach Abhishek Nayar Praises Lanning
UP Warriorz head coach Abhishek Nayar welcomed Lanning's appointment, saying, "Meg brings with her clear thinking and a calm demeanor. Her ability to handle the team in pressure situations will prove to be a game-changer for our group."
Why is this change important for UP Warriorz?
UP Warriorz had been struggling with player availability and inconsistent performance for some time. With Lanning's arrival, the team has gained a leader who not only knows how to score runs but is also an expert at winning major tournaments.
