Ajit Agarkar said, "This became clear after Rishabh Pant was ruled out. He has a lot of experience, you know. I don't know about Pant's injury, but I hope he returns for the South Africa series." Rishabh Pant was injured during the Test series against England, which prevented him from playing the final Test of the series. Pant is currently recovering from the injury.

Ravindra Jadeja made his Test debut against England in Nagpur in December 2012. The Indian all-rounder has played 85 Test matches so far. During this period, he has scored 3886 runs in 128 innings at an average of 37.72 and a strike rate of 55.22, including 27 fifties and 5 centuries. In bowling, Jadeja has 330 wickets.
