IPL 2026: Shane Watson appointed Kolkata Knight Riders' new assistant coach, aiming to win fourth title
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as the team's assistant coach. Watson will work alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar to guide the team's strategy and performance in the upcoming IPL 2026 season.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore welcomed Watson to the franchise, saying,
"We are extremely excited to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as both a player and coach will prove invaluable to the team. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we expect great results from his contributions."
Expressing his excitement about this new role, Shane Watson said,
- "It's an honor to join a prestigious franchise like the Kolkata Knight Riders. I have always admired the passion of KKR fans and the team's desire for victory. My goal, along with the coaching group and players, is to lead KKR to another title."
- Regarding Shane Watson's illustrious career, he played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals, scoring over 10,000 runs and taking over 280 wickets. He was part of Australia's 2007 and 2015 World Cup-winning teams. Watson has played 145 matches in the IPL, including four centuries.
- The Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL trophy three times (2012, 2014, and 2024). They finished runners-up in 2021. Now with Watson joining the team, KKR is hopeful that the team will become IPL champion for the fourth time in 2026.
