Kolkata, March 2, 2026: The India vs. West Indies match in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 was considered a virtual quarter-final. And in this high-pressure match, Sanju Samson performed a feat that sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. With a blistering unbeaten 97 (50 balls, 12 fours, 4 sixes), Samson led India to a 5-wicket victory, chasing a target of 196, securing a place in the semi-finals.

The Eden Gardens stadium erupted in cheers as the 67,000-plus crowd watched Samson win the match. At the end of the match, Samson knelt down, looked up at the sky, and placed his hand on his heart – a moment that became memorable for fans. This was India's highest successful chase in a T20 World Cup (the previous record was 173). Samson surpassed Virat Kohli's 82* (2022 WC vs PAK) to become India's highest score in a successful chase.

Former Indian captain and commentator Kris Srikkanth praised the innings. He said, "Sanju's innings is no less than Virat Kohli's iconic 82* at the MCG – in fact, it's on that level. I've seen that innings of Virat at the MCG, but watching Samson bat in this chase, it felt like God had aligned everything for him. Not a single careless shot, not a single moment of getting out. I've never seen batting like this before in my life."

Srikkanth further said, "Samson made everything look easy under pressure. Even in the last two matches, he shone in big moments – something like 20 off 7. Everything seemed like this day was made for him. It's a big task to eclipse Virat, but Samson did it."

Samson said post-match, "This means the world to me. It was a childhood dream to play for India, and today was the day I was waiting for." Gautam Gambhir (coach) and Ravi Shastri also praised his maturity and composure.

Brief Scorecard of the Match

  • West Indies: 195/4 (20 overs) – Roston Chase 40, Jason Holder 37*
  • India: 199/5 (19.2 overs) – Sanju Samson 97*, Tilak Varma 27; Holder 2/38.
  • Player of the Match: Sanju Samson.

India's next match will be against England in the semi-finals (March 5, Mumbai). Samson's innings not only won the match but also kept India's dream of a title defense alive. This has become a new iconic moment for cricket fans – where the "Samson special" is now part of history!
