There is mixed news for fans of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The team's regular captain and Australian stalwart, Pat Cummins, has confirmed that he will not be available for the initial phase of IPL 2026. Currently recovering from a back injury, Cummins plans to make his return during the second half of the tournament.

Pat Cummins Reveals His 'Comeback Plan'

Speaking on a recent podcast titled 'Business of Sport,' Cummins provided an update on his fitness. He stated, "I am still recovering from my back injury, but the situation has improved now. I have started bowling in the nets." He further clarified that while he would not be available at the start of the IPL, he intends to join the team by the middle of the tournament.

Cummins' goal is not merely to play in the second half; he aims to be fully fit so he can lead the team to the finals and play a pivotal role in their campaign.

Ishan Kishan to Take Over Captaincy Duties

In Cummins' absence, Ishan Kishan will be seen leading SRH in the opening matches. Expressing his confidence in Ishan's leadership, Cummins noted that he possesses a track record of successful captaincy in domestic cricket. Furthermore, Cummins acknowledged that for an overseas captain, communication can sometimes be hindered by local languages and dialects; in such scenarios, the role of experienced local players becomes crucial.

A Prolonged Battle with Injuries

Pat Cummins has been grappling with injuries for the past few months. Following an injury sustained during the tour of the West Indies last July, he was able to play only one Test match during the Ashes series. He was even forced to miss the T20 World Cup due to fitness concerns.

However, he has already arrived in Bengaluru ahead of the opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28, so that he can continue his rehabilitation while staying with the team.

Good News for the SRH Camp

Another piece of relieving news for Hyderabad is that Sri Lankan fast bowler Ehsan Malinga has received clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket and has joined the team. This will bolster the team's fast-bowling attack.
