Women's Super Smash tournament witnessed a stunning performance from Australian batting legend Laura Harris, who surprised the cricket world with a blistering innings. Making her debut for Otago, Harris completed her half-century in just 15 balls. With this, she equaled the world record for the fastest fifty in women's T20 cricket, previously held by Mary Kelly (2022).
A storm of runs on the field: Chasing a target of 146 runs against Canterbury, Harris came to the crease in the sixth over. She faced 17 balls in her innings and scored 52 runs, including 6 fours and 4 sixes. Thanks to her explosive batting, Otago secured the victory in the 15th over.
Queen of Records: Laura Harris's achievement is even more special because all six of her 50+ scores in her career have come in less than 20 balls. Previously, she had scored half-centuries in 17, 18, and 19 balls. No other batter in the history of women's cricket has scored a half-century in less than 20 balls more than once.
Otago gets a bonus point: Harris's rapid-fire innings also earned Otago their first bonus point of the season. According to the new Super Smash rules, a team gets an extra point if they achieve the target with a run rate 1.25 times higher than the opposing team.
