15 August 2020… Independence Day was being celebrated, but that very evening a chapter in the history of Indian cricket ended quietly, without any fanfare. A video on Instagram and a song in the background, 'Pal Do Pal Meri Kahani Hai', and with this, the best captain of Indian cricket, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, said goodbye to international cricket. Without any press conference, without any noise, Dhoni, known for his simplicity and humility, posted a video of his career in the same style and said, consider me retired from international cricket after 15 August 2020.
Before the fans could digest this, within half an hour another news broke their hearts. Dhoni's good friend and Indian cricket's great batsman Suresh Raina also announced his retirement from international cricket. Fans were shocked by these two retirement decisions and could not understand what was happening. Dhoni and Raina's friendship was quite famous. Raina, famous as 'Mr. IPL', played with Mahi in Chennai Super Kings for many years.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly set to select and announce the Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup on Tuesday, August 19. According to a report in the Times of India, the meeting will be attended by captain Suryakumar Yadav, who will be travelling to Mumbai from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Raina told Telecom Asia Sport, "The experience of Rohit and Virat is very important. It is very important for the seniors to stay connected with the juniors. Shubman has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit." He further said, "They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cup. Virat also won the last IPL. For the efficient leadership skills they have shown in their respective careers, they need to be a part of the dressing room."
Prithvi Shaw has been selected in the 17-member Maharashtra squad for the All India Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament to be held in Chennai from August 18 to September 9. This will be Shaw's first tournament for Maharashtra after moving from Mumbai in July.
Sehwag said on Padamjeet Sehrawat's YouTube channel, “In the 2007-08 series when we were in Australia, I played the first three matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the team. After this I was not selected in the team for some time. Then I felt that if I cannot be a part of the playing XI, then there is no point in me playing ODI cricket.”
Speaking to ICC Digital, Mithali said, “I think India need to take advantage of those small opportunities during big matches, this is where the balance of the teams involved in the competition remains. They try to make the most of those opportunities and try to turn the momentum towards themselves and India need to take advantage of those opportunities.”
“India are trying to stick with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, but Gill is also struggling to find a place in the team at the moment. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a brilliant series in England, and middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer are unlikely to be selected in the T20 squad. The selectors have asked Jaiswal to focus on Test cricket,” a BCCI source told the Times of India.
