Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma are finalizing their divorce, with Chahal agreeing to pay Rs 4.75 crore as alimony. The couple, who had been married since December 2020, recently filed for divorce by mutual consent, citing "compatibility issues" as the primary reason for their separation. Given their prolonged period of living separately, the Bombay High Court has stepped in to expedite the legal proceedings.
Chahal and Verma’s relationship first gained public attention during the COVID-19 pandemic when Chahal approached Verma for online dance lessons. Their chemistry soon blossomed, leading to their engagement in August 2020 and subsequent marriage in December of the same year.
However, after nearly two years together, rumors about trouble in their marriage surfaced in 2023. Speculation grew stronger when fans noticed that they had unfollowed each other on social media, and Chahal had deleted several pictures with Verma. Despite maintaining a dignified silence at the time, the couple’s decision to part ways became evident when they officially filed for divorce on February 5, 2025.

As per legal proceedings, the couple initially filed for divorce in the family court and requested a waiver for the mandatory six-month cooling-off period. However, the court declined their request, citing that the full alimony amount had not yet been settled. Reports indicate that Chahal had paid Rs 2.37 crore out of the agreed Rs 4.75 crore at the time of their plea.
Considering Chahal’s commitment to the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Bombay High Court intervened, directing the family court to expedite the divorce process. The court noted that the couple had been living separately for over two and a half years and had fulfilled the necessary consent terms regarding alimony. As a result, the divorce proceedings were fast-tracked, ensuring that Chahal could focus on his professional career without additional legal burdens.
A major aspect of the divorce settlement is the financial arrangement between the two parties. The Rs 4.75 crore alimony payment serves as a lump-sum financial settlement to ensure a clean break between them.
Legal experts suggest that this settlement takes into account factors such as Verma’s lifestyle, career prospects, and the duration of their marriage. Unlike traditional alimony cases where payments are made periodically, this one-time settlement eliminates the need for future financial obligations between the two parties.

Given Chahal’s prominence in Indian cricket and Verma’s popularity as a social media influencer, their divorce has been a topic of significant media attention. Fans have expressed mixed reactions—some supporting their decision to part ways amicably, while others speculating on the reasons behind the separation.
Despite the media frenzy, both Chahal and Verma have remained private about the details of their divorce. They have requested respect for their personal lives and have refrained from making any public statements beyond legal filings.
As one of India’s premier spin bowlers, Chahal is an integral part of the Rajasthan Royals squad in the upcoming IPL 2025 season, which begins on March 22. Given his involvement in the tournament, the resolution of his divorce case before the IPL provides him with much-needed mental clarity to focus on his game.
Cricket analysts suggest that while personal matters can impact an athlete’s performance, Chahal has consistently displayed professionalism on and off the field. His ability to separate personal and professional responsibilities will be crucial as he gears up for another competitive season in the IPL.
