The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 has kicked off in thrilling fashion, with India delivering a commanding 88-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The win has propelled India to the top of the points table with a perfect record of two wins in two games.
Batting first, India posted a total of 247 runs, with Harleen Deol top-scoring with 46 runs off 65 balls. Pakistan, in reply, faltered under pressure and were bundled out for 159 runs in 43 overs. India’s bowling duo Kranti Gaud and Deepti Sharma starred with the ball, picking up three wickets each to dismantle the Pakistan lineup.

After winning the toss, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana opted to bowl on a humid Colombo afternoon. While her bowlers — especially Diana Baig — impressed with a four-wicket haul, India’s disciplined approach and late partnerships proved crucial in setting a competitive target.

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur praised her bowlers and spinners post-match, saying, “Kranti was outstanding, and our spinners did a great job breaking partnerships. It wasn’t an easy pitch to bat on, but our intent was to play longer and build momentum.”
On the other hand, Fatima Sana admitted her side leaked runs at crucial stages: “We gave away too many runs during the powerplay and death overs, which cost us the game.”
Following India’s victory, they now sit comfortably at the top with 4 points, maintaining a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.515. Australia and England are closely trailing, with Bangladesh emerging as a surprise contender early in the tournament.
