Why Shreyas Iyer Not Selected For Test Series vs West Indies: The Indian team for the Test series against the West Indies has been announced, but middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer's name is missing from the squad. Many are wondering why he wasn't selected. So let's find out the reason behind it.

Know Why Shreyas Iyer Is Missing from the Test Squad

6-month break from Test cricket

Shreyas Iyer recently informed the BCCI via email that he wants to stay away from red-ball cricket, i.e., Test cricket, for the next six months. He made this decision due to his chronic back problem. The BCCI understood his concern and granted him this break.

Old back injury became the reason

Shreyas Iyer has been suffering from back problems for a long time. He told the board that the longer format of Test cricket causes stiffness and pain in his back. He played a match in the Ranji Trophy last year, where he could take breaks between overs, but that is not possible during a Test match. For this reason, he felt that being part of the Test team would not be appropriate given his current fitness.

Let's hear what BCCI said on this issue

BCCI said: "Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Following his back surgery in the UK and despite recovery, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wishes to use this break to work on his fitness. Following his decision, he was also not selected for the Irani Cup."

Iyer was initially named captain of the Indian A team for the Test series against Australia A. However, he made the decision only after playing the first match, after which wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel was given the captaincy.

Iyer will now focus his attention on ODI cricket. During this break, he will work on his fitness so that he can perform well in the upcoming Australia tour.
