Why Is Pakistan Cricket Underperforming?

Pakistan cricket, once a powerhouse in international cricket, is now at a crossroads. Despite a rich cricketing heritage and a pool of talented players, the team’s struggles in major tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 highlight deeper systemic failures that need urgent attention.

What’s Going Wrong?

1. Selection Based on Connections, Not Merit

One of the biggest concerns is favouritism in player selection. Many deserving cricketers are overlooked, while underperforming players get opportunities based on personal connections rather than skill. This weakens the overall strength of the squad.

2. Political Interference

Cricket decisions should be made for cricketing reasons—but that’s not always the case in Pakistan. From coaching appointments to leadership roles, politics often influence administrative decisions rather than performance. This creates instability and confusion among players.

3. Weak Domestic Cricket Structure

A strong domestic system is the foundation of a great national team. Unfortunately, frequent changes in Pakistan’s domestic cricket policies have left young talent without a clear path to success. Without proper investment and structure, the pipeline of quality players remains weak.

4. Leadership and Captaincy Crisis

Captains come and go too often in Pakistan cricket. Without a clear long-term leadership plan, players struggle to find stability. A strong leader with proper backing is essential for consistent performance on the international stage.

How Can Pakistan Cricket Bounce Back?

1. Transparent Selection Process

Selections must be based purely on performance and fitness. Strict criteria should be set, ensuring that only deserving players make it to the national team.

2. Strengthen Domestic Cricket

Revamping domestic cricket is key. Better facilities, structured leagues, and investment in grassroots cricket will create a stronger talent pool for the future.

3. Stable and Visionary Leadership

Pakistan needs a long-term captain, not frequent leadership changes. A strong, well-supported captain will bring much-needed stability to the team.

4. Keep Politics Out of Cricket

Cricket administration should be run by experts, not politicians. Decisions must be based on what’s best for the team, not external influences.
