The BCCI has announced the 15-member Indian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team does not include several prominent players like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Another surprising aspect of this team is that the BCCI has not named any reserve or standby players. BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia himself explained why Team India has not announced any standby players for the World Cup.
Regarding the absence of standby players for the T20 World Cup 2026, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, Since this tournament is being held in our country, we can include any player in the team as a replacement if needed. That is why we have not announced any reserve players.

The BCCI typically announces reserve or standby players for major tournaments. The purpose of this is to ensure that if a player is unable to continue playing during the tournament due to injury or any other reason, there are players available to replace them. If the World Cup were being held abroad, the BCCI might announce reserve players to avoid any travel-related complications, but next year's T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (vice-captain), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper)
Shubman Gill had previously served as vice-captain, but since he is not part of the team this time, the role had to be given to someone else. In previous T20 matches, when Shubman was unavailable due to Test match commitments, Axar Patel had taken on the vice-captaincy. Therefore, this decision was made to maintain continuity in leadership rather than to send any new message.
