Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya's bat was checked during the 29th match of the Indian Premier League 2025 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, April 13. When Pandya came in to bat at number five after the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav, the umpire checked the width of his bat to ensure it was in accordance with the tournament's set guidelines.
The umpire was seen using a gauge, which he ran across the full length of Pandya's bat to ensure the ball passed through the bat without causing any discomfort. This was the third such instance of umpire's intervention to check the width of the bat on the day.

Bat sizes are closely scrutinised during several high-scoring encounters in the tournament, as teams often go past the 200-run mark with ease. Recently, Sunrisers Hyderabad registered the second-highest successful run chase in the tournament's history when they surpassed Punjab Kings' mammoth total of 245 runs in just 18.3 overs.
So, when the scores get high, umpires carefully scrutinise bat sizes to ensure batsmen don't get an unfair advantage over bowlers, who are already hampered by a number of factors.
Hardik managed just two runs. Mumbai posted a solid 205/5 thanks to impressive contributions from Tilak Varma (59), Ryan Rickelton (41), Suryakumar Yadav (40) and Naman Dheer (38*).
In reply, Delhi needed just 87 off 59 balls with nine wickets in hand but the ground was short of boundaries. However, their batting collapsed dramatically and they were bowled out for 193 in 19 overs. Karn Sharma was the pick of the MI bowlers in his first match of the season. He returned figures of 3/36 in his four overs.
