Rishabh Pant did not come out to bat as part of a tactical decision during Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) innings against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025 match at Eden Gardens on April 8, 2025. Batting first, LSG posted a strong 238/3 in 20 overs after KKR chose to bowl.
Rishabh Pant, who is the captain of LSG, decided to keep himself back in the batting order, allowing other in-form players like Mitchell Marsh (81 off 48 balls), Nicholas Pooran (87* off 36 balls), Aiden Markram (47 off 28 balls) and later Abdul Samad and David Miller to capitalise on the platform set by the top order.
After the match, Rishabh Pant revealed that the decision to retain the left-right batting combination was taken to counter KKR's spinners, especially Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Looking at their spinners, we wanted to retain the left-right combination. It worked out well for us, he said. This approach allowed LSG to effectively exploit KKR's bowling attack, as the selected batsmen were in rhythm and able to maximize scoring opportunities. Pant's decision proved to be correct as LSG won a thrilling four-run victory, clearly demonstrating his leadership skills in slowing down the game and disrupting KKR's momentum.
