Team India is going through a phase of change since Rahul Dravid stepped down from the post of head coach. On Tuesday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had chosen Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian team. Not only Dravid, the BCCI has confirmed that batting coach Vikram Rathod, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip have also resigned from their respective posts. Before becoming the coach, Gambhir had laid down a condition that he would choose his own staff. In such a situation, according to media reports, Gambhir has offered some names to the BCCI. However, Gambhir himself is a specialist batsman, hence there is less chance of being appointed as a batting coach. Currently, three names are being discussed a lot in media reports regarding the bowling coach. One of them also won the ODI World Cup with Gambhir in 2011.
According to news agency ANI, former fast bowler Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathi Balaji are being considered to be the bowling coach of the national team. The source told ANI, 'BCCI is discussing the names of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathi Balaji for the post of bowling coach. BCCI is not interested in Vinay Kumar's name.' Actually, earlier it was reported that Gambhir had recommended Vinay Kumar's name for the bowling coach. However, BCCI had also asked for names of other options. Out of these, BCCI liked the names of Zaheer and Balaji. Apart from this, Gambhir has also recommended the name of Abhishek Nair for the assistant coach.
Zaheer Khan is a contender to become the bowling coach of Team India: Zaheer has taken 311 wickets in 92 Tests and a total of 610 wickets in 309 international matches across all formats for the Men in Blue. He is considered one of the greatest left-arm fast bowlers. Zaheer was part of the world-winning Indian team in 2011 along with Gambhir.
