With Rohit Sharma approaching the twilight of his illustrious Test career, discussions around India's next red-ball leader have already begun gaining momentum. Leading the side with a calm head and solid performances, Rohit has set high standards, and his eventual retirement will leave a leadership void that needs a capable and visionary successor.
Several names are being considered for the captaincy role, each with their strengths and unique leadership styles. India is not short on talent, but choosing a leader who can handle the pressures of Test cricket while guiding a young team is critical.
Jasprit Bumrah has already shown glimpses of his leadership potential. During the 2022 England tour, he led India as captain, and his tactical understanding won over many. As a senior figure and a consistent performer across formats, Bumrah’s calm nature and analytical thinking make him a strong candidate. His numerous injury breaks and the physical toll fast bowlers take, however, may cast doubt on his long-term availability.
KL Rahul has a great deal of international experience and has captained India in Test matches in the past. He has captained in difficult overseas conditions and understands the dynamics of the game well. Despite this, Rahul’s inconsistent form and recurring injuries may work against him when considering a full-time leadership role.
Among the younger players, Shubman Gill is being groomed as a potential leader. Gill, who is smart on the field and graceful with the bat, embodies the current Indian cricket generation. Although still relatively new to the Test setup, his temperament and maturity make him a promising candidate for the long haul.

If fully fit, Rishabh Pant is another name in contention. Pant, a former vice-captain, is renowned for his reckless style and ability to win games. His on-field energy and ability to read situations make him a natural leader, though his fitness after the accident and consistency will play a major role in determining his chances.
Veterans like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are also valuable voices in the dressing room. While they may not be long-term options due to age, they could serve as transitional leaders if needed. Their cricketing acumen and vast experience are undeniable assets.
There will be a big gap for India's next Test skipper if Rohit Sharma leaves. Whether the baton is passed to a proven leader like Bumrah or Rahul, or a future star like Gill or Pant is entrusted with the role, the decision will shape the next era of Indian Test cricket. The BCCI may also prefer a gradual transition, allowing the new leader to settle in before taking full charge.
