Trading for the 2026 Indian Premier League is underway. On Saturday, November 15th, all 10 franchises will release their retention lists, detailing which players they have retained and which players they have released. The IPL 2026 auction will take place next month. The release of the retention lists will provide insight into the teams' auction strategies.
The biggest trade of this season is believed to be between Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson. There are reports that the Rajasthan Royals may trade Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings, possibly replacing him with Ravindra Jadeja. This means a deal could be reached between the Royals and the Super Kings. Additionally, there are reports that Arjun Tendulkar could be traded to the Mumbai Indians in exchange for Shardul Thakur from the Lucknow Super Giants.

The first trade in IPL history took place in 2009, before the second season of the IPL. This trade took place between the Mumbai Indians and the then Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). In a player-for-player swap, Mumbai Indians acquired fast bowler Ashish Nehra from Delhi in exchange for Shikhar Dhawan.
This trade amount was equal to their previous season's fees. Dhawan was bought by Delhi for ₹12 lakh, while Nehra was bought by Mumbai Indians for ₹1.6 crore. Following that season, Mumbai Indians and RCB swapped Robin Uthappa and Zaheer Khan. Uthappa went from Mumbai Indians to RCB, while Zaheer came from Bangalore to Mumbai Indians.
It is noteworthy that Hardik is the first IPL-winning captain to be traded. Only two other captains have been traded in the tournament so far. Punjab Kings captain Ravi Ashwin was traded to Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020, while the same year, Delhi Capitals also bought Rajasthan Royals captain Ajinkya Rahane.
