IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has included Ayush Mhatre in the team in place of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad for the remaining matches of IPL 2025. Gaikwad suffered an elbow injury before the match against KKR on April 11. In his absence, MS Dhoni will captain the team for the remaining matches.
Who is Ayush Mhatre
Talking about Ayush Mhatre, 17-year-old Ayush made his debut in the 2024-25 Irani Cup. Just days after his debut, Mhatre scored a century and 176 runs against Maharashtra in the 2024 Ranji Trophy. With this, he became the youngest batsman to score 150+ runs in List A men's category, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal. Mhatre has emerged as the next big thing in Indian List A cricket; he has scored 458 runs in seven matches at an average of 65.78.
Ayush remained unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction at a base price of Rs 30 lakh. Now the player has been asked to join the CSK team immediately. It will be important to see whether the player will be able to play against LSG on April 14 or not.
CSK in IPL 2025
CSK have had a disastrous outing in the current IPL season; the team has lost five matches in a row and are currently placed at the bottom of the overall standings. The team has just one win to their name, which came against Mumbai Indians. Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has pointed out lapses in fielding that have cost them matches. However, their performance with the bat in the last match against KKR was poor. The team managed just 103/9 in 20 overs after falling to KKR's spinners. CSK now need to ensure that they win all their remaining matches to stay in the race to qualify for the play-offs.
