The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the grandest celebration of cricket. Every season kicks off with a spectacular opening ceremony featuring performances by Bollywood stars, fireworks, laser shows, dance acts, and a gathering of celebrities. This event keeps millions of fans glued to their screens and adds a touch of glamour to the tournament. However, throughout the history of the IPL's 19 seasons (spanning from 2008 to 2026), this traditional, grand opening ceremony has not always taken place.
On several occasions, it has been cancelled sometimes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at other times for economic reasons, and occasionally as a mark of respect following national or humanitarian tragedies. In this blog, we will explore in detail how many times the opening ceremony did not occur, which specific seasons were affected, the reasons behind these cancellations, and what transpired on those occasions. Furthermore, we will discuss the IPL's grand tradition of inaugurations, the evolving trends witnessed over recent years, and the recent decision regarding the 2026 season.
When and why was the IPL Opening Ceremony cancelled?
| Year | Reason for Cancellation |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Tribute to Bengaluru Victims: The BCCI cancelled the ceremony to show respect for the 11 fans who lost their lives in a tragic stampede in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, during celebrations after RCB won their first title. |
| 2021 | COVID-19 Protocols: Due to the strict "bio-bubble" safety measures and the pandemic situation in India, the board opted for a simple start without festivities. |
| 2020 | Pandemic & Logistics: The tournament was moved to the UAE due to COVID-19. Large-scale entertainment was scrapped due to health risks and logistical constraints. |
| 2019 | Pulwama Terror Attack: The BCCI cancelled the ceremony as a mark of respect for the martyred CRPF personnel. The entire budget (roughly 20 crore) was donated to the families of the victims. |
The IPL began in 2008. Right from the very first season, the BCCI established a tradition of hosting a centralized, high-profile opening ceremony. Bollywood stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan, and others would perform on stage. This 30-to-45-minute show, held prior to the match, served as an added source of entertainment for the fans.
1. IPL 2019 – In Honor of the Pulwama Terror Attack
On February 14, 2019, a terrorist attack was carried out against CRPF personnel in Pulwama, in which more than 40 soldiers were martyred. A wave of anger and mourning swept across the entire nation. The BCCI decided that the opening ceremony for the 2019 IPL would not be held. The estimated cost of the event at the time (approximately ₹20 crore) was donated to the families of the martyrs—₹11 crore to the Indian Army, ₹7 crore to the CRPF, and ₹1 crore each to the Navy and the Air Force.
Prior to the CSK vs RCB match in Chennai, a solemn tribute ceremony was organized—which also featured a military band. There were neither any Bollywood dance performances nor any fireworks during this event. This marked the first instance where an opening ceremony was cancelled for a humanitarian or national cause.
2. IPL 2020 – Financial and COVID Preparedness
As early as late 2019, the BCCI had announced that the opening ceremony was a "waste of money." The decision to discontinue it was taken in light of its high costs, low fan interest, and the exorbitant fees charged by performers. Subsequently, the entire tournament was played in a bio-bubble in the UAE, where the sole focus remained on cricket. No ceremonies were held.
3. IPL 2021 – Strict COVID-19 Pandemic Protocols
Amidst the second wave of COVID-19, IPL 2021 was held in Chennai and Abu Dhabi. Due to strict bio-bubbles and safety protocols, no grand opening ceremony was organized. The match (MI vs RCB) began directly. There was just one small, inclusive gesture—members of the Differently-Abled Cricket Council were invited.
4. 2026 (IPL 19, Current Season) – In honor of the Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy
The opening ceremony scheduled to take place before the RCB vs SRH match at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28, 2026, was cancelled. The reason for this was the death of 11 people in a stampede that occurred during the celebrations of RCB's maiden IPL trophy win in June 2025.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated unequivocally: In solemn observance of the tragic incident of June 4, 2025, there will be no formal ceremony or cultural/entertainment program marking the commencement of IPL 2026." RCB players are wearing jersey number 11 during practice sessions; 11 seats will be left vacant, and players may wear black armbands. However, a grand closing ceremony is planned for May 31st, at the conclusion of the tournament. This marks the second instance since 2019 that a ceremony has been cancelled due to humanitarian reasons (mourning).
