The Big Bash League (BBL) is one of the most exciting franchise T20 leagues, held annually in Australia. The current season, BBL 2025-26, commenced on Sunday, December 14th, and, like the previous season, features eight teams.
The eight teams participating in the tournament are the Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades, Brisbane Heat, Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Adelaide Strikers, and Melbourne Stars. The Hurricanes are the defending BBL champions, having won the title last season by defeating the Sydney Thunder in the final.
While the Indian Premier League (IPL) is known for its massive budgets, star power, and traditional T20 structure, the BBL is popular for its continuous experimentation with new ideas and formats to make the game faster and more entertaining for the audience.

Similar to international cricket, the IPL also features a powerplay during the first six overs. During these overs, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. However, in Australia's Big Bash League, the mandatory powerplay is limited to the first four overs.
Additionally, the batting team can choose when to take the next two powerplay overs. However, they can only take these overs after the 11th over. When this Power Surge rule is in effect, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. This rule was introduced before the 2020-21 season and was implemented to add tactical depth and excitement to the second half of the innings. This rule allows teams to take advantage of fielding restrictions later in their innings and provides a significant advantage to chasing teams.
