What is RTM Rule in IPL?

IPL 2025 Retention Rules: BCCI may soon make a big announcement for the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). There will be a mega auction for the upcoming season of IPL and this time there will be no option of Right to Match i.e. RTM. Instead, there is a possibility that all the teams will be given the option to retain five players each. A meeting was also held last month with the board and team owners regarding this, in which RTM and retention were discussed. But do you know what the RTM rule is. So let us know in this blog what is RTM Rule in IPL?.

What is RTM Rule in IPL?

Any retention, except for players retained before the mega auction, has to be done through the RTM (Right to Match) card. The RTM card gives any franchise the opportunity to match the last bid for a player from their team from the previous season.

Any franchise can retain 5 players in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Apart from this, any one player can be included in its team with the help of RTM. One thing to keep in mind in this rule is that the franchise can buy only that player with the help of RTM, who was released by the same franchise in the auction. Apart from this, in exchange for buying its player using RTM power, the franchise will have to pay the same amount to that franchise as the player has joined another franchise.

Example of RTM Rule: Suppose a player was previously playing for an IPL team. For example Chris Gayle. But his team (eg RCB) did not retain him before the bidding, after which some other team (eg CSK) buys him in the auction. After this, if his team (eg RCB) feels that this player was in my team and should remain in my team, then that team can add him back to their team by using RTM. However, to add their old player to their team again, they will have to spend the same amount of money as any other team (CSK) had bid to buy him.

Ravichandran Ashwin also raised questions on RTM rule

Ravichandran Ashwin gave his reaction on RTM rule: Right-handed all-rounder Ashwin believes that the RTM rule will be unfair to the player and due to this he may suffer a loss in terms of earnings in the auction. He explained how a team has the option to RTM a player. After using it, the franchise will bid at the base price of the player, due to which the player does not get much money according to the value.

Talking openly about this rule on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, 'Nothing can be more unfair to a player than RTM.

Because how has the RTM rule been so far? For example, there is a player named X. He was a player of a team named Sunrisers. His current price is around five to six crore rupees. After coming to the auction, the Sunrisers team wants to buy him back. Therefore, the Sunrisers team will bid for the player at a base price of two crores.

In the auction, the teams of KKR and Mumbai Indians are bidding for that player. The bid is up to six crores. In the auction, the player was sold by Mumbai Indians for six crores. Therefore, Sunrisers will bid six crores for the player and the player will join their team. In this way, despite placing the highest bid on that player in the auction, Mumbai Indians will not be able to include him in the team.

Ashwin said that only the franchise will get the benefit of the RTM card rule. If a franchise gets three RTMs, then the players will not get anything. Their price is already low in the mega auction.

According to the report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may allow IPL franchises to retain five players in the upcoming IPL auction. However, the franchise will not have the option of Right to Match.

If five players are allowed to be retained, as claimed in the report, then all the franchises including Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians will be able to retain their core team. This decision can also be very beneficial for Mumbai Indians, who can retain players like Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.

According to the report, in a recent meeting held at the BCCI headquarters, the board discussed the retainership of players with all the 10 team owners. Most of them wanted to retain 5-6 players as it would give them continuity. It is understood that after considering the request of the franchise, the BCCI has decided to allow five players to be retained, so that the brand value of the franchise remains intact.
