Watch India Women vs Sri Lanka Women highlights: The Indian women's team made a strong start to the Women's World Cup 2025. They defeated co-hosts Sri Lanka by 59 runs in a rain-interrupted match at the ACA Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on September 30.
The match was interrupted several times due to rain, and Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atapattu won the toss and elected to bowl first, reducing the match to 47 overs.
The hosts had a poor start, with star opener Smriti Mandhana dismissed early for 8. However, Pratika Rawat (37) and Harleen Deol (48) formed a strong partnership to steady the innings and take India to 81, but were dismissed in quick succession. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (21) and Jemimah Rodrigues (0) failed to make much of an impact.
Deepti Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57) rescued the team from trouble with a brilliant 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Their partnership helped India reach a strong total. Sneh Rana scored a quick 28 to help India reach 269/8 in 47 overs.

Submitted to bat first, India didn't have a good start. Sri Lankan spinner Inoka Ranaweera bowled brilliantly, taking four wickets for 46 runs, leaving India in a precarious position at 124/6. Big names like Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, and Harmanpreet Kaur departed early. But Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma steadied the innings. They combined cautious and aggressive batting to form a crucial 103-run partnership, helping India reach a respectable total. Amanjot displayed aggression in her 57-run innings, while Deepti maintained a composed 53.

Chasing 270, Sri Lanka struggled to score. Atapattu top-scored with 43, while Nilakshi de Silva contributed 35. However, the Indian bowlers kept the hosts under pressure by taking wickets regularly.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211 in 45.4 overs, giving India a comfortable 59-run victory. For India, Deepti Sharma produced a brilliant all-round performance, taking 3/54, while Sneh Rana (2/32) and Shreyanka Patil (2/37) provided excellent support.
Deepti Sharma performed brilliantly in the first match of the tournament. Batting lower down the order, she scored 53 runs, including three fours, to help the team reach a decent total. Then, with the ball, Deepti took 3 wickets in 10 overs, turning the match in India's favor. Her contributions in both departments earned her the Player of the Match award.
