Karun Nair scored his first fifty: Karun Nair, who is making a comeback in the Indian team, hit a half-century, but with the sharp bowling of Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, England kept the upper hand by restricting the visiting team's score to 204 for six in the first innings on the rain-affected first day of the fifth and final cricket test. India lost wickets at regular intervals in front of the excellent bowling of Atkinson (two wickets for 31 runs) and Tongue (two wickets for 47 runs) and apart from Nair, no other batsman could play consistently in the favourable bowling conditions. Due to rain, only 64 overs of play were possible on the first day. This is Karun's second 50+ score in his test career. Earlier, he had played an unbeaten innings of 303 runs against England in December 2016. This is his first 50+ innings after that.
India lost six wickets for 153 runs, after which Nair (52 not out, 98 balls, seven fours) and Washington Sundar (19 not out) tried to bring the team back by making an unbroken partnership of 51 runs for the seventh wicket. Like the first two sessions, the third session also did not start well for India. Sai Sudarshan (38), who was playing at one end, was caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith on a brilliant outswinger from Tongue, which brought India's score to 101 runs for four wickets.
