On the fifth day of the fourth match of the ongoing five-match Test series between India and England, captain Ben Stokes offered the guests an early draw. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar turned it down and continued batting.
In fact, when England's star all-rounder Stokes made this offer, both the Indian batsmen were just a few runs away from their centuries and India's score was 386 for four. India had taken a lead of 75 runs over England. In such a situation, both of them thought it appropriate to bat and completed their centuries. During this, Jadeja completed the fifth century of his Test career in 182 balls while Sundar completed his first Test century in 206 balls. Both remained unbeaten after scoring 107 and 101 runs respectively.

Gill supported the decision of Jadeja and Sundar. He said after the match, 'Of course it depended on the batsmen at the crease. They batted brilliantly and at that time both were close to 90 runs, so we felt that they deserved a century.

Stokes defended his decision to propose India to end the fourth Test early, saying that he did not want to risk his key fast bowlers as the match was heading towards a certain draw. He said, 'I think India had a very difficult time. Both of them (Jadeja and Sundar) were playing incredibly well. The match had reached a mode from which only one result was possible and I did not want to put any of my fast bowlers at risk of getting injured. I had stopped bowling with my fast bowlers half an hour before my proposal.'
