The Indian team suffered a two-wicket defeat. Australia was set a target of 265 runs to win, which they achieved in 46.2 overs. The Indian team had lost the first ODI match played in Perth. With this defeat, the Indian team has now lost the series. The third match of the series will be played in Sydney on October 25.

After losing the toss and batting first, the Indian team scored 264 for 9. The Indian team's start was not impressive. They suffered their first setback at the score of 17 runs. Captain Shubman (9 runs) was the victim of fast bowler Xavier Bartlett. Bartlett then dismissed Virat Kohli in the same over. Kohli remained unbeaten for the second consecutive match.

From here, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer steadied India's innings with a 118-run partnership for the third wicket. Rohit Sharma reached his fifty off 74 balls. This was his slowest half-century in ODIs since 2015. It was also Rohit's 59th fifty of his ODI career. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer reached his half-century off 67 balls.

This partnership was broken by Mitchell Starc, who dismissed Rohit (73 runs off 97 balls with the help of 7 fours and 2 sixes). Shortly after Rohit's dismissal, Shreyas also departed after scoring 61 runs off 77 balls (seven fours).

From here, India lost wickets at regular intervals. KL Rahul (11 runs), Washington Sundar (12 runs), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (8 runs) failed to make a significant impact. Meanwhile, Axar Patel scored 44 runs to help India cross the 200-run mark. Harshit Rana (24*) and Arshdeep Singh (13) batted well in the death overs, helping India reach a strong total. From there, Matthew Renshaw and Matthew Short put on a 55-run partnership for the third wicket. Renshaw was bowled by Axar Patel for 30 runs. Washington Sundar then dismissed Alex Carey (9 runs) cheaply.

After Alex Carey's dismissal, Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly put on a 55-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Short faced 78 balls and scored 74 runs, including four fours and two sixes. After losing five wickets, Mitchell Owen and Cooper Connolly put on a 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Australia achieved the target in 46.2 overs.
