Sri Lanka's star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has relinquished his captaincy of the national T20I team. This comes after Sri Lanka's disappointing exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
Hasaranga, who was appointed T20I captain only last year, led the team in just 10 matches. A statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) revealed that Hasaranga expressed his desire to step down in the best interest of the team, focusing on his playing role.
"Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always," Hasaranga wrote in his resignation letter.
The SLC has acknowledged his contribution and confirmed that Hasaranga will remain a vital part of their future squads.
This sudden leadership change leaves Sri Lanka with a question mark ahead of their upcoming white-ball series against India starting on July 26th. The team is yet to announce their squad or a replacement captain for the series.
Several names are being speculated as potential candidates for the new captain of the T20I team. Kusal Perera, Dasun Shanaka, and Dhananjaya de Silva are among the top contenders. Each of these players brings a unique set of skills and leadership qualities that could benefit the team. The final decision will likely consider factors such as experience, strategic acumen, and the ability to unite and motivate the team.
Despite stepping down as captain, Hasaranga's role as a player remains undiminished. His contributions with the ball have been crucial for Sri Lanka, and his presence in the team continues to be a source of strength. Hasaranga's focus will now shift entirely to his performances on the field, where he aims to support the new leadership and help Sri Lanka achieve success in upcoming tournaments.
