T20I cricket is a completely different format from Test and ODI cricket. It became official in 2005 and has since become the most popular format among fans. Initially, it was played sporadically, but now it has become a regular occurrence. Teams enjoy playing T20I because the World Cup is played every two years.
There are a total of 108 teams worldwide that play in this format. But, which team tops the list with the most wins? In fact, only seven teams have won more than 100 matches in T20I cricket. In this article, we will discuss the top 5 teams with the most wins in T20I cricket.
1. India – 182 wins
Team India created history by winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, proving their status as one of the best teams in the format. India is one of only three teams to have won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup twice, the other two being West Indies and England. India has won the most matches in the shortest format and will be looking to further strengthen their lead over other teams.
The two-time T20 World Champions have played 271 matches and won 182 games, with a W/L ratio of over 2.4, the highest for any Test-playing nation. They have also lost 74 games; seven were tied, and eight ended in no result.
2. Pakistan – 171 wins
Pakistan has been one of the best teams in the shortest format. In fact, they were the first team to win more than 100 matches in T20I cricket. The Men in Green won the 2009 T20 World Cup and finished runner-up in the 2007 and 2022 editions. They have played a total of 295 matches, winning 171, losing 113, tying four, and leaving seven matches inconclusive.
3. New Zealand – 129 wins
New Zealand, along with Australia, were the teams that played the first official T20I match in 2005. The Black Caps have been unlucky not to win an ICC title in this format. However, their overall record is quite impressive. They became the third team to win more than 100 T20Is and play more than 200 matches. New Zealand has played 254 games so far, winning 129 and losing 104; 10 of their matches have been tied and 11 have ended in no result.
4. Australia – 123 wins
Australia played its first official T20I match in 2005. However, compared to the other two formats, Australia hasn't quite achieved the stats they would have liked in T20I cricket. They won their first T20 World Cup title in the UAE in 2021. So far, Australia has played 223 matches, winning 123 and losing 91. Three of their matches were tied, and seven ended in no result.
5. South Africa – 118 wins
South Africa has been a formidable team in this format. The Proteas haven't won any titles, but their record is far better than some world champions. South Africa played their first match in the T20I format in October 2005 against New Zealand. So far, they have played 220 matches and have won 118, while losing 97. Two games were tied and three ended in no result. Their best performance in any ICC T20 World Cup came in 2024, where they finished as runners-up in the tournament.
