In the world of cricket, players often reach the pinnacle of success on the strength of their talent however, off-field controversies or a lack of discipline towards the sport can sometimes bring their illustrious careers to a premature end. Many such players have squandered their promising careers due to their own mistakes. Here, we present five cricketers who ruined their international careers due to issues ranging from match-fixing scandals and disputes with selectors to clashes with their respective cricket boards.

1. Mohammad Amir – Match-fixing and disputes with management

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir faced a prison sentence and a five-year ban on charges of deliberately bowling a 'no-ball' during the Lord's Test. Subsequently, despite making a comeback to cricket, Amir failed to establish a rapport with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the coaches, and the management; consequently, he retired from international cricket, alleging mental harassment.

2. S. Sreesanth – Spot-fixing was the reason

Former Indian fast bowler S. Sreesanth was a key member of the teams that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup; however, his career took a drastic turn for the worse after he became embroiled in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. His arrest by the Delhi Police in connection with the case along with the life ban imposed on him by the BCCI brought a premature end to his career, which was at its absolute peak at the time. Although the BCCI eventually lifted the ban several years later, by then Sreesanth had lost both his rhythm and his youth.

3. Kevin Pietersen – War with the ECB

Kevin Pietersen, one of England's most gifted batsmen, had a career plagued by controversy. In 2012, during a series against South Africa, Pietersen became embroiled in a dispute; he was accused of sending derogatory messages about his own team captain, Andrew Strauss, to the opposing side. Subsequently, owing to his strained relationships with the coach and the board, he was dropped from the team in 2014 a blow to his career from which he would never recover.

4. Ambati Rayudu – Dispute with Selectors

Former Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu's international career garnered more attention for his temper and controversies than for his talent. Following his non-selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup squad, he took a jibe at selector MSK Prasad's "3D player" remark by tweeting that he had ordered "3D glasses" to watch the World Cup. Due to this discord and the ensuing tension with the Board, he prematurely bid farewell to international cricket.

5. Andrew Symonds – Lack of discipline towards the sport

Subsequently, his failure to attend team meetings, arriving at practice under the influence of alcohol, and violating the Cricket Board's regulations proved costly for him. His career effectively came to an end in 2009 when he was sent home just before the T20 World Cup due to a lack of discipline.
