top 5 best Test innings of Cheteshwar Pujara

One of the best Test batsmen, Cheteshwar Pujara has announced through an emotional post on social media that Cheteshwar Pujara will retire from cricket on August 24. Pujara played his last international match against Australia in the World Championship (WTC) Final 2023 at The Oval, London.

Cheteshwar Pujara earned a name for his clever defensive batting technique, which included immense patience, indomitable grit, determination and willpower to face every difficulty. Pujara became widely recognized as the second incarnation of Indian legend Rahul Dravid, on whom he based his Test batting career and became a wall for the national team like "The Wall" himself.

1. 206* vs England, 2012 (Ahmedabad)

Cheteshwar Pujara's career-best score came early on, when he smashed a marathon 206 not out in Ahmedabad in 2012. After spending more than eight-and-a-half hours at the crease, he thrashed Anderson and Broad to help India declare the innings at 521/8. He tormented England bowlers by hitting 21 boundaries in 513 minutes. India won the Test by nine wickets, and Pujara's double century was a testament to his ability to handle long innings.

2. 204 vs Australia, Hyderabad (2013)

In March 2013, Pujara made his mark once again with a brilliant 204 against Australia at Hyderabad. His innings, laced with 30 fours and a six, included a 370-run partnership with Murali Vijay. India's 503 all but ended Australia's hopes and they were bowled out cheaply twice to lose by an innings and 135 runs. Pujara's stroke-filled double century showed that they were maintaining a balance between defensiveness and controlled aggression.

3. 153 vs South Africa, Johannesburg (2013)

Pujara scored a brilliant 153 in the second innings of the 2013 Johannesburg Test. His 270-ball innings with 21 boundaries helped India post a target of 458. Although the match was drawn, the innings was one of the best by any Indian in South Africa, showing courage despite the pace and bounce.

4. 145 not out vs Sri Lanka, Colombo (2015)

Pujara made a stunning comeback in Colombo in 2015. Called to open the innings in place of the injured Vijay, he hit an unbeaten 145 in challenging conditions. India were 180 for 7 but Pujara, along with Amit Mishra, took the score to 312. Although he was dismissed for a duck in the second innings, his century in the first innings laid the foundation for India's 117-run win and a big series sweep.

5. 56 v Australia, Brisbane (2021)

With the four-match Test series of the 2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) tied at 1-1, India were set a challenging target of 328 in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, where Australia had not lost in nearly three decades. Chetan Sakariya suffered several physical injuries while chasing runs on an uneven pitch on the fifth day, but batted for more than five hours and scored 56 runs off 211 balls to lay the foundation for a Test and series win against Australia.
