The biggest controversy in the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy so far happened in the year 2008. When the Monkeygate controversy took place between former Indian legendary bowler Harbhajan Singh and late Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds. Harbhajan and Symonds clashed with each other in the Test match played in Sydney in 2008. After this, the matter kept on escalating, Symonds accused Bhajji of calling him a monkey and making racist remarks. After this, Bhajji had to go to the Sydney court. The referee banned Bhajji for 3 matches, but later Team India protested against it and this ban was lifted from Bhajji. But this controversy had created a lot of tension between India and Australia.
