India’s young batter Tilak Varma created history in the third T20I match against South Africa at Dharamshala. The 23-year-old left-hander broke a big record of Virat Kohli and proved his value while chasing a target. With this achievement, Tilak Varma is now being called India’s new “Run Chase Master”.
Calm knock under pressure
While chasing the target, Tilak Varma played a sensible and calm innings. Batting at number three, he scored an unbeaten 25 runs off 35 balls, including three fours. His partnership with vice-captain Shubman Gill helped India stay in control during the chase.
Tilak Varma Surpasses Virat Kohli Record
With this unbeaten knock, Tilak Varma’s average against South Africa in T20 Internationals reached 70.50. This is now the highest average by an Indian batter against any team (minimum 300 runs). He went past Virat Kohli, whose best average was 70.28 against Pakistan.
Tilak also overtook Kohli in terms of batting average while chasing targets in T20Is:

So far, Tilak Varma has scored 543 runs in 16 T20I innings while batting second. His highest score in a run chase is an unbeaten 72, and his consistency under pressure has impressed everyone.
Tilak Verma Shows Good form in the current series
Tilak Varma has performed well throughout the South Africa T20I series:
- 1st T20I: 26 runs
- 2nd T20I: 62 runs
- 3rd T20I: unbeaten 25 runs
He has now scored 468 runs in 14 innings at number three, with an excellent average of 58.5. Overall, Tilak has made 1110 runs in 39 T20 matches at an average of 48.26.
India’s New Reliable Chase Specialist
Even though his Dharamshala innings was not very big, it was very important. Tilak Varma showed maturity and confidence while chasing the target. His record-breaking performance proves that India has found a reliable batter for pressure situations.
