The past few days have been quite controversial for the Sun Group and Kavya Maran. After criticism related to the Men’s Hundred auction, the Sun Network has now become part of another major controversy involving Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

This time, the issue has reached the Madras High Court, where Sun TV Network Limited has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the IPL franchise.

Sun TV Accuses CSK of Copyright Violation

According to reports from The Indian Express, Sun TV has alleged that CSK used copyrighted music, dialogues, and background score elements from popular films such as Jailer, Jailer 2, and Coolie.

The disputed content appeared in a promotional video released by CSK on March 1, ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The video was meant to unveil the team’s new jersey.

Soon after its release, fans noticed that the audio used in the promo sounded very similar to music associated with films featuring Rajinikanth.

Video Edited After Online Attention

The promotional video quickly gained traction online. However, it was later removed and re-uploaded by CSK with noticeable changes to the audio.

At first, many believed the edit was just a routine modification. But the legal complaint now suggests that the change may have been made after the copyright concerns surfaced.

Music Rights Belong to Sun TV

In the legal filing, Sun TV stated that the films mentioned in the case were produced by the company. It also highlighted that music composer Anirudh Ravichander had officially transferred the rights to exploit the music from these films to the network through a formal agreement.

Because of this agreement, Sun TV claims it holds exclusive rights over the music, background score, and related audio elements used in those films.

Allegations of Unauthorized Use on Social Media

Sun TV further alleged that the copyrighted material was used without proper authorization across several social media platforms. These include Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Facebook.

The company argues that CSK’s use of the audio content for promotional purposes violated its intellectual property rights.

Another Controversy for the Sun Group

This legal dispute comes shortly after backlash involving the Sun Group’s cricket operations. Fans had already expressed concerns when a franchise linked to the group reportedly signed Abrar Ahmed during The Hundred auction discussions.

While that issue sparked debates among cricket fans, the new legal battle with CSK has taken the controversy to a much bigger stage.

What Happens Next?

The case will now proceed in the Madras High Court, where both parties are expected to present their arguments. If the court finds merit in Sun TV’s claims, the case could lead to legal penalties or further action related to copyright violations.

For now, the incident has created a lot of buzz among both cricket fans and film industry followers, as it involves two powerful names from sports and entertainment.
