Matthews wrote, I am writing this post with a grateful heart and unforgettable memories. It is time for me to say goodbye to the most beloved format of the game, international Test cricket! The last 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka have been the greatest honor and pride for me. Nothing can beat the feeling of patriotism and service when one wears the national jersey. I have given my all to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today.
Matthews wrote, I am grateful to the thousands of fans of the game and Sri Lankan cricket who have been with me in the best and worst times of my career. The first Test match against Bangladesh in June will be my last match with the red ball for my country. I am saying goodbye to the Test format only. As discussed with the selectors, I will be available for selection for white ball formats whenever my country needs me.
Matthews wrote, I believe this Test team is a talented team with many future superstar players playing. Now it seems like the best time to give way to a young player to shine for our country. I would like to thank the Almighty God, my loving parents, my beautiful wife and wonderful children, as well as my family and close friends, who collectively have always believed in me, supported me and stood by me in every situation.
Mathews wrote, Also I would like to express my special thanks and gratitude to Sri Lanka Cricket and all the coaches for their support throughout my career. Thanks to my management team for their dedication and hard work over the years. A chapter has ended, but the love for the game will remain forever. With much love and pride, yours truly Angelo Davis Matthews.
