Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has made a big statement in support of fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Ganguly questioned the selectors, saying that Shami is fully fit and bowling brilliantly, yet he is constantly being ignored. He clearly stated that Shami should be given a chance to return to the Indian team in all three formats.
35-year-old Mohammed Shami has not been included in Team India for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. This decision surprised many cricket experts, as Shami had recently performed brilliantly in the Ranji Trophy.
Sourav Ganguly told PTI, "Shami is fully fit and bowling brilliantly. He single-handedly led Bengal to victory in three Ranji Trophy matches. I don't understand why he is being ignored.
Shami took 15 wickets in the first two Ranji Trophy matches of this season. He bowled 91 overs in three matches, while going wicketless in the match against Tripura. Despite this, his performance was one of the most impressive in domestic cricket.
Ganguly's statement comes after the Indian selection committee gave young fast bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep a chance for the Test series against South Africa, while the experienced Shami was left out of the team.
Many former cricketers also believe that Shami's experience and control could prove extremely useful for India overseas. However, the selectors may be exercising caution given his injury history.
Sourav Ganguly's statement is a clear message to the selectors that experience should not be overlooked. India is scheduled to play important Test series against South Africa, England, and then Australia in the coming months, where the presence of an experienced bowler like Shami could prove crucial.
Shami is one of India's most reliable bowlers. He is fit, working hard, and ready to play for the country. Leaving such players out for a long time could be detrimental to the team.
