Shubman Gill set to be appointed India new ODI captain: 26-year-old Test captain Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed captain of the Indian team for the three-match ODI series against Australia. Current captain Rohit Sharma and former Indian captain Virat Kohli will also be part of the team. Gill's appointment is likely after the selectors spoke to the Test captain.
Shubman Gill's appointment is likely because the selectors spoke to the Test captain and told him that keeping the bigger picture in mind, they want him to captain the team for the ICC World Cup 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2027. Gill also attended the selection meeting on Saturday.

Shubman Gill will replace Rohit as captain. However, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be included in the ODI team. These two veteran players can play under Shubman Gill's captaincy only as players. Whether they can play until the 2027 ODI World Cup will depend on their form upon their return.

The Indian team will begin the ODI series against Australia on October 19. The second ODI will be played on October 23, and the third on October 25. This will be followed by a five-match T20 series starting on October 29. Suryakumar Yadav will undoubtedly captain the T20 team. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya's participation remains uncertain due to his injury.
Rohit, who is already 38, will be 40 by the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. It seems age will be a factor the BCCI will consider, and it remains to be seen whether Rohit will remain in the management's plans even as a player, let alone as captain.
Meanwhile, most of the players from the 2025 Champions Trophy-winning team are expected to be selected for the ODI leg of the series, including players like Rohit and Virat Kohli. This also means Shreyas Iyer may be able to retain his place in the 50-over squad.
However, the question remains whether Iyer will return to the T20I team as well. Since selectors can select more than 15 players for bilateral series, unlike major tournaments, there should be room for Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Everyone knows that both of them could not make it to the Asia Cup 2025 team.
