Punjab Kings on Sunday emerged winners in the IPL 2025 mega auction by signing their former captain Shreyas Iyer for a record price of Rs 26.75 crore. The Capitals defeated Delhi Capitals in a fierce bidding war for the signature of the star Indian cricketer at the two-day event in Jeddah.
Kolkata was the first team to bid for their former captain and then Punjab Kings also joined in. There was a tough competition between the two teams for the star batsman. Delhi Capitals placed a bid of Rs 7.50 crore while Punjab Kings backed out. However, PBKS placed a bid of Rs 12 crore after KKR dropped their bid.
The IPL 2024 title-winning captain was always tipped to attract a strong bidding war for his signature due to his recent sensational form in domestic cricket. After scoring two back-to-back centuries in Ranji Trophy games, the Mumbai captain scored a blazing hundred in the first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy a day before the auction day. Shreyas guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title last year but was surprisingly not retained on October 31. Shreyas is currently struggling to find a place in India's national teams but has been in good form across formats lately.
Shreyas Iyer missed the 2023 edition of the tournament due to a back injury but returned for the 2024 season as the captain of the team. Shreyas struggled for consistency in the early stages of the tournament but excelled with his calm leadership skills. The right-handed batsman scored 352 runs in 14 IPL 2024 innings with the help of two fifties at a strike rate of 146.86. However, he remained unbeaten on five occasions and led his team to their third IPL title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final.
