Indian ODI team’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of a Sydney hospital after suffering a serious rib injury during the third ODI against Australia. Reports suggest that the injury led to internal bleeding, which is why doctors decided to keep him under intensive care for close observation.
What Happened During the Match
The incident occurred during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). While fielding, Shreyas Iyer made a brilliant effort to take Alex Carey’s catch. He ran backward and caught the ball successfully but lost his balance while landing, which caused a heavy impact on his left rib cage.
After returning to the dressing room, Iyer complained of severe pain and breathing discomfort. The medical team immediately sent him for scans, which revealed internal bleeding near the injured rib area. Due to the seriousness of the condition, doctors admitted him to the ICU to prevent any possible complications or infection.

Why Shreyas Iyer Was Admitted to ICU
According to medical reports, Shreyas Iyer suffered internal bleeding after the injury. This happens when blood vessels inside the body rupture due to impact. Internal bleeding can be dangerous if not treated immediately, as it can lead to infection or organ damage.
To ensure his safety, doctors placed Iyer in the ICU, where he is being continuously monitored. The decision was made as a precautionary measure to control the bleeding and to provide him with 24-hour medical care.
A source close to the team said,
“He’s been in the ICU for two days now. Scans showed internal bleeding, so he was admitted immediately. Doctors are keeping him under strict observation for a few more days.”
Health Update and Recovery
Iyer is currently stable, but doctors have advised complete rest. He is expected to stay in the hospital for 2 to 7 days under observation. The medical team will decide on his discharge only after ensuring that the internal bleeding has completely stopped.
His recovery time will depend on how quickly his body responds to treatment. For now, there is no official update on when he will return to cricket.

Shreyas Iyer’s Recent Form
Before getting injured, Shreyas Iyer had shown good form in the ODI series. After struggling in the first match, he made a strong comeback in the second ODI at Adelaide, scoring a brilliant half-century. However, India lost that game.
In the third ODI, India bounced back with a nine-wicket victory, thanks to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s dominant batting. Iyer didn’t get to bat in that match but got injured while fielding during his outstanding catch.
Impact on Team India
Shreyas Iyer’s injury is a major setback for Team India, as he plays a vital role in the middle order and serves as the vice-captain. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his progress in coordination with Australian doctors.
Fans and teammates across the cricket world have wished him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon.
