The inaugural champions of the IPL, the Rajasthan Royals, have now changed hands and passed into the ownership of new proprietors. Yesterday, a US-based consortium led by Kal Somani acquired the Rajasthan Royals for a staggering sum of US$ 1.63 billion (approximately ₹15,290 crore). This deal is being hailed as one of the largest transactions in the history of the IPL.

Back in 2008, when the first season of the IPL commenced, the Rajasthan Royals signed Shane Warne to serve as both their captain and coach. At that time, Warne negotiated a unique stipulation alongside his remuneration package. He stipulated that for every year he played for the team, he would receive a 0.75% equity stake (ownership share) in the franchise.

  • Salary: A mere ₹9.35 crore for four seasons.
  • Condition: A 0.75% equity stake for each year of service.
  • Outcome: After playing for four years, Warne had accumulated a 3% ownership stake in the team.

When Warne struck this deal in 2008, no one could have imagined that the IPL would eventually evolve into such a colossal global brand.

Today, with the team having been sold at a valuation of ₹15,301 crore, Shane Warne's 3% stake is now worth a staggering ₹460 crore. This sum will now go to his children and family.
