Gavaskar also cited former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to explain Kohli's abilities. He said:
I just heard Ricky Ponting say Kohli is the best he has seen in ODI cricket. When an Australian captain says Kohli is the best, I don't think there's any room for debate.
Why is Kohli above Sachin?
The former Indian captain said that there was a time when Sachin Tendulkar's 51 ODI centuries was considered a record that no one could touch.
You know Sachin was at the top with 51 centuries, but when you surpass the great Sachin Tendulkar you know where you stand.
Gavaskar clarified that this world record of 52 centuries gives Virat Kohli an unmatched stature in the history of ODI cricket.
Coach Shukri Conrad reacts to 'grovel' comment
Gavaskar also reacted to South Africa coach Shukrie Conrad's groveling remark about bringing India to its knees. He described the remarks as ill-advised and said the coach had "gone a bit carried away".
It may have been an ill-advised comment - wrong time, wrong place... Given the strong relationship between Indian and South African cricket over the last 30 years, I think he can simply clarify that he got a little carried away.
